The LSU men’s tennis team won its first match in the Southeastern Conference with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 11 Texas A&M.
“We just kept playing,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown.” When the opportunity presented itself [in the last match] we were able take advantage.”
The match opened with the Tigers rolling out a completely revamped doubles lineup, as all three pairs were new combinations. But despite these changes, the Aggies took the doubles point as seniors Olivier Borsos and Roger Anderson fell 5-8 and freshman Tam Trinh and senior Stefan Szacinski lost 6-8.
Freshman Harrison Kennedy tied up the score he took down his opponent 6-2, 6-2 earning his first career SEC singles win.
The Aggies took the lead back after Trinh fell 3-6, 6-1. Szacinski responded with a dominant victory 6-2, 6-4, leveling the score at 2-2.
Sophomore Chris Simpson stretched the Tigers’ lead to 3-2 with his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jeremy Efferding, who defeated No. 1 Alex Domijan of Virginia in straight sets on Wednesday.
After Borsos fell 2-6, 6-7 to even the score 3-3, all focus turned to court six, were freshman Boris Arias was playing in only his second singles match of the dual match season. Arias proved to be cool under pressure as the match went all the way to a third set tiebreaker before he was able to clinch the match with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 victory.
“There were a lot of great individual performances today,” Brown said. “It was really a good team win.”
The Tigers will not have much time to savor this victory as they return to W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium to take on Michigan at 2:30 p.m on Sunday.
