On a day when play was moved indoors due to sub-30 degree temperatures, the LSU men’s tennis team received equally chilly treatment from No. 6 Kentucky.
Led by the powerful 1-2 punch of No. 18 Tom Jomby and No. 21 Anthony Rossi, the Wildcats shut out the Tigers 4-0, dropping LSU to 0-2 in the Southeastern Conference.
LSU (5-4, 0-2 SEC) found itself down early, as senior Roger Anderson and freshman Tam Trinh fell to the No. 21 duo of Jomby and Kevin Lau, 5-8. Kentucky wrapped up the doubles point after Rossi and Grant Roberts defeated senior Olivier Borsos and freshman Boris Arias, 8-5, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Singles play did not go any better for the Tigers, as Jomby quickly bested Trinh, 6-2, 6-4. The Wildcats stretched the lead to 3-0 after Rossi beat sophomore Chris Simpson, 6-3, 6-1. Rossi and Jomby have been stalwarts on the top two courts for Kentucky this season with a combined 28-2 record in singles play.
“[Kentucky] is really hitting on all cylinders right now and are very good indoors,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown.
Charles Minc clinched the match for Kentucky after a 6-4, 6-4 victory against senior Stefan Szacinski. With the match decided and the Tigers looking at a long trip back to Baton Rouge, the remaining three singles matches were left unfinished.
Borsos was leading his opponent, 7-6, 5-3, and on his way to a third-straight singles victory when play was suspended. He was the only Tiger to win a set against the Wildcats.
“We are still trying to find our identity as a team,” Brown said. “[LSU] can learn a lot from a loss, and we had a couple of those this weekend. It will be good to get back to some warmer weather.”
The Tigers will host Auburn (8-3, 0-1) in their SEC home opener Friday at 3 p.m. at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
