LSU sophomore outside Linebacker Sci Martin is “out” with an undisclosed injury, coach Ed Orgeron said at a post-scrimmage press conference.
Martin has missed practice all week after suffering an injury in the Tigers’ first scrimmage, and was expected to get more reps because of the absence of junior defensive Arden Key.
“We have a lot of talent there,” Orgeron said on the outside linebackers, “Not a lot of experience. Corey Thompson is going to be an excellent linebacker. Rashaan Thornton is going to be excellent at outside linebacker with Arden Key and Andre Anthony.”
Key, who left the team for “personal reasons” is progressing and working toward returning to the team, Orgeron said.
Orgeron said that the defensive line is an area of improvement, and that they made a lot of progress this week.
Defensively, Orgeron thought they had a good day, limiting the offense to half the amount of yards than they did in the first scrimmage.
Regarding the offense Orgeron said senior quarterback Danny Etling is not entrenched as the starter just yet.
“It’s still open,” Orgeron said. “They take two steps forward, one step back. Danny is the first team quarterback, no one has beaten him out, but that doesn’t mean that won’t happen.”
Etling was 5-of-13 for 97 yards in the scrimmage at Tiger Stadium.
Orgeron said that all the quarterbacks, on the roster have a chance to take the starting job.
“Justin [McMillan] has done some good things,” Orgeron said, “Lindsey [Scott] has done some good things, Lowell [Narcisse] is still learning, but Lowell may be the most talented of all of them. We are gonna give Myles Brennan a chance. We’ve still got a ways to go.”
Junior enter Will Clapp, who practiced this week after receiving shoulder surgery in January, is still limited, but Orgeron said freshman offensive lineman Austin Deculus has stepped up this spring.
“Love him,” Orgeron said. “Tough, physical, has played several positions. He is really learning under Jeff Grimes, and making a lot of progress.”
After spending a few weeks with new offensive coordinator Matt Canada, Orgeron said the offense is coming along and he even compared the way Canada runs his offense to Stanford’s.
“They have been clean,” Orgeron said regarding the offense. “The execution has good, they are playing at a high rate of speed, putting the defense on their heels.”
Orgeron gave a brief update into the kicking battle, mentioning that sophomore kicker Connor Culp had a good day, and made a couple field goals.
