University officials said they intend to fire Associate Dean of Students Jim Welles, according to a statement released Tuesday.
LSUPD arrested the campus disciplinarian last week on charges of possessing multiple computer files, videotapes and compact discs of child pornography.
The statement also addressed news the University learned Monday about a prior felony conviction Welles received in 1983 in Tiptonville, Tenn., a small town in the northwest corner of the state. While teaching American history at Lake County High School, Tiptonville police arrested Welles for stealing items like a microwave and guns valued at more than $200. He served six months in prison.
The statement said that when Human Resources hired Welles in 2001, they did not conduct background checks.
Welles’ resume only included employment history until 1983.
University officials said they now conduct background checks before hiring professional positions.
The statement said the University Human Resources Department sent Welles a letter of intent to terminate his position and will give him until May 9 to resign.
An office employee tipped off LSU police last week after she suspected that a photo of several nude, prepubescent boys she found on a Dean of Students office printer belonged to Welles.
Police obtained search warrants for Welles’ office and residences in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Police seized several University documents with illegal photos including several campus-correspondence envelopes and University letterhead.
Police seized:
• Black, plastic file box containing numerous campus-correspondence envelopes containing several photographs of nude males
•A binder titled, “Bruce Henry Perrin,” an LSU student arrested in 2003 for possessing child pornography and containing printed documents
•Campus-correspondence envelopes containing hand-written notes of links to pornographic Web sites.
•Campus-correspondence envelopes containing a printed-document story of sexual activities with juveniles.
•Campus-correspondence envelopes containing yahoo profiles
•Printed photograph on LSU letterhead of several juvenile boys wearing Boy Scout uniforms
•Seven computers
•A hand-held camcorder
•Three cameras
