LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s game against Clemson.
Coach Kelly spoke on quarterback Garret Nussmeier’s jersey change from 13 to 18 and the history of the number 18.
“I like the fact that we centered back to the quarterback position because that’s the history of 18,” Coach said.
“To have Matt Mauck and what he represented in 2003 coming out and leading them to a championship and bringing it back to a quarterback I think sends a great message about the history and tradition of 18.”
Coach Kelly spoke on naming head captains, Nussmeier and Whit Weeks, along with having two new gameday captains every week.
“They represent both sides of the ball,” Coach said. “I believe we just have a lot of guys that have earned that opportunity.”
Coach Kelly talks about Clemson’s quarterback and the defense for what the Tigers should be expecting.
“Cade Klubnik is a quarterback that plays his best ball at the end of the year,” Coach says.
“Peter Woods we have to deal with on the inside. Parker is from off the edge. They are going to require a lot of attention, or they’re going to ruin your day.”
Coach Kelly is very confident in his team and his roster. He says the depth of this roster is the best from his previous three years, but he knows the team still has to show up and play.
“I think it’s an evolution,” Coach says. “Each year, you’re developing depth and developing a DNA within your team when you know much more about them in terms of what to expect. But I think at the end of the day, it’s about depth and probably the most depth in the roster.”
“We still have to go out and play and perform at the highest level, but I think what’s different is it’s a mature group that has played a lot of football and we’re not going into a game where we can’t handle the moment.”
