LSU football released an official statement confirming that the team and head coach Brian Kelly were separating Sunday after multiple outlets had previously reported his firing.
The program said the reason for Kelly’s firing was that “the success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize.”
“I made the decision to make a change after last night’s game,” Athletic Director Scott Woodward said in the statement. “We wish Coach Kelly and his family the very best in their future endeavors.”
The statement also confirmed that terms on the separation are still being worked out. Kelly’s contract says he’s owed a buyout of about $54 million to be paid out monthly until 2031, though the price could be reduced if Kelly obtains other “football-related employment,” including in media or as a coach elsewhere.
However, LSU officials are working to negotiate with Kelly on a reduced number, multiple outlets have reported. Ross Dellenger of On3 said the negotiation could take weeks or months.
“I continue to believe that LSU is the best football program in America and that our head coach position is among the best,” Woodward said. “We will immediately begin a national search for a new head football coach, and I am confident in our ability to bring to Baton Rouge an outstanding leader, teacher and coach, who fits our culture and community and who embraces the excellence that we demand.”
