For the past two years, LSU students have been asking for expanded American Sign Language (ASL) courses beyond the beginner level. Right now, LSU only offers ASL 1, even though more than 1,200 students signed a petition requesting ASL 2, 3, and 4.
This strong interest shows how deeply students value inclusion and accessibility on campus. Many Deaf Louisianans live in and around Baton Rouge, and LSU has an opportunity to strengthen connections with the local Deaf community by offering a full ASL program.
ASL is not just an elective — it’s a vital language that promotes understanding, respect, and belonging. Students who take ASL gain skills that can serve them in careers in education, healthcare, interpreting and social work.
We invite The Daily Reveille editors and LSU administrators to visit an ASL 1 class and experience the enthusiasm and dedication of students who want to keep learning. The interest is here, the community is nearby and the time for LSU to act is now.
