In a Tuesday night baseball game against Grambling State, the LSU Tigers took the win 7-1. Grambling State has an overall record of 5-14, while LSU holds a 15-7 record after tonight’s game. Grambling put up a fight, but LSU proved they wanted to be known as the better group of Tigers in this game. LSU last played Vanderbilt this past weekend, going 1-2.
There were very few defensive errors tonight for both teams, but many pitcher changes occurred. Beginning early on, LSU subbed Grant Fontenot for starting pitcher Regan Ricken in the top of the second inning. Fontenot ended the second inning with a strikeout and then was later subbed out for Dax Dathe in the fourth inning.
After just a few pitches, Dathe was subbed out for Cooper Williams. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Grambling State pitcher Shaun Mante was subbed out for Trenton Shaw, who allowed LSU to score their third run of the night.
Starting the sixth inning, there was another pitcher change for LSU, bringing in Mavrick Rizy. With a quick few outs, LSU made a double play to end the top of the sixth, and Grambling brought Jacobie Smith to pitch. Soon after the seventh inning, Grambling subbed Smith out for Nick Robinson.
The LSU Tigers then brought in another pitcher at the top of the eighth inning, Ethan Plog, and after only one out, subbed in Gavin Guidry. Grambling, on the other hand, brought in their fifth pitcher at the bottom of the eighth inning, Hampton Phillips.
With bases loaded, Cade Arrambide was walked by Phillips, giving LSU another run scored. At this point, the score is now 7-1. LSU then brings in their eighth and final pitcher of the night, Marcos Paz, who finished the game.
For LSU, these pitchers had a combined 15 strikeouts and held Grambling to only six hits and three walks.
Standout hitters in this midweek matchup were left fielder Chris Standfield, who hit a single and brought two runs in, and catcher Omar Serna Jr., who hit a double and a solo home run.
LSU will take on Oklahoma State starting Thursday, March 19, in a three-game sequence that will go until Saturday. The Sooners are currently 17-3 and will play LSU for the first time this season to end the week.
