The Oklahoma Sooners defeated LSU Softball 8-4 on Sunday afternoon to take the series 2-1. With the loss, the Tigers move to 4-8 in SEC play.
LSU Cece Cellura got the start in the circle, but she didn’t last very long. The Tiger was pulled after only 11 pitches. She gave up three runs and two home runs in the top of the first.
Oklahoma’s Kai Minor got the offense started with a lead-off double. Very next pitch, Kendall Wells hits a home run to right field and the Sooners jump out to a quick 2-0 lead.
Two batters later, Gabbie Garcia hits a home run over the wall in left-center field. 3-0 Sooners and Heavener is in for Cellura. This would be Heavener’s second day in a row pitching and her second day in a row throwing over 99 pitches.
Heavener would hit Isabela Emerling and then Emerling advances to second on a wild pitch. Ailana Agbayani takes a pitch right back up the middle to score Emerling and the Oklahoma lead sits at 4-0.
In the top of the first, the Tigers would strand Sierra Daniel on base.
Bottom of the second for LSU and Kylee Edwards is up to the plate. She works a full count and on the sixth pitch, she drives the ball deep to left field. 4-1 Oklahoma lead.
Next, Char Lorenz is up and she unleashes on the first pitch she sees and shoots a homer over the wall in the same spot that Edwards hit her home run.
4-2 Oklahoma lead and hope is back in the LSU dugout.
Heavener had been pitching very well up until the fifth inning. Oklahoma’s Gabbie Garcia hits a single down the left field line. Then, Kasidi Pickering hits a single through the right side. Runners on first and second and Emerling at the plate. 2-1 count and Emerling launches a home run to center field and the Sooners extend their lead to five.
Top of the sixth inning, with two outs, Ella Parker hits a home run to left-center field and Oklahoma takes a 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Kylee Edwards hits a lead-off home run for her second of the game and third of the series.
In the seventh and final inning, Jalia Lassiter reaches base on a walk. Then, Daniel hits a single through the left side and Lassiter advances to second.
Two batters later, Alix Franklin shoots a single up the middle and Lassiter comes home. Tigers trail 8-4. Unfortunately, this is where the scoring would stop for LSU.
Next up for LSU is a series versus the Missouri Tigers. LSU will head to Columbia, Missouri for the first game of a three-game series starting on Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m. CT inside the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
