Three runs was all LSU needed to topple over Auburn in game one of its final conference series on Thursday night at Tiger Park.
After a late rain delay Thursday evening, the Tigers were able to pick up where they left off from Tuesday night’s 16-0 win over McNeese State.
In the bottom of the second inning, LSU’s Char Lorenz was able to score after a wild throw to first base from Auburn third baseman Haven Roebuck, giving LSU the leverage early on.
Moments later, Jalia Lassiter singled a hit into the infield, allowing lead runner Ally Hutchins to score and make it 2-0. The next play, Alix Franklin delivered up at the plate to give LSU a 3-0 lead heading into the third inning.
That inning alone was the difference maker for the Tigers over their SEC rival.
Meanwhile, Auburn struggled to gain production on offense with LSU’s Patyn Monticelli in the pitcher’s circle. Monticelli ended her night with nine strikeouts while pitching 115 pitches.
The senior transfer from Oklahoma proved yet again to be a player Head Coach Beth Torina can rely deep into SEC play and potentially the postseason.Thursday night’s win against Auburn marks Monticelli’s seventh win in the purple and gold and pushes her ERA to a 2.73.
LSU plays its second game of its final Southeastern Conference series against Auburn on Friday at 6 p.m. at Tiger Park.
