LSU baseball players Zac Cowan and Chris Stanfield spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon as they prepare for their last home series at Alex Box Stadium against the Florida Gators.
With the Tigers posting one of their worst performances of the season over Georgia, giving up 36 runs across three games, Cowan hopes that this time around, things will look different from out of the bullpen and expects him and his teammates to have stronger outings against Florida.
“We got a challenge every weekend when we play in the SEC,” Cowan said. “There’s definitely a handful of guys that haven’t pitched as much that I think will get a good chance this weekend. It’s all about approaching things with the right attitude and having confidence, because there’s no reason they shouldn’t have confidence.”
Heading into this weekend’s matchup, LSU (29-24, 9-18 SEC) have lost seven of its last 10 in conference games but look to turn things around nearing the SEC Tournament.
Stanfield, despite battling multiple injuries this season, is taking on that mindset, too. As the senior outfielder is closing in on his final home series this weekend at Alex Box Stadium, he wants to be the guy his team can depend on and look up to heading into the final two weeks.
“It’s not over till it’s over,” Stanfield said. “And crazy stuff can happen. We got to believe that and know we understand where we’re at but we still have opportunities ahead.”
“We’ve had good moments,” Stanfield said. “We just got to really cherish those and look at the positive side of things and enjoy where we’re at because we’re still at the best place in the country.”
As both key contributors to LSU’s National Championship run last season, both Cowan and Stanfield know to expect the unexpected, specifically in SEC play. The Gators currently rank No.2 in the SEC and don’t look to slow down their productivity against in-conference opponents like LSU.
Now, it’s up to veterans like Cowan and Stanfield to bring the Tigers together for one last shot of making a run in the SEC for a chance at making the postseason. Otherwise, the Tigers will miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011.
LSU faces up against Florida starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.
