On October 21, TigerTV hosted the last Gubernatorial Debate of the governor’s race in the Journalism Building on LSU’s campus. Three of the four major candidates attended, attempting to gain more voters.
This debate was created by students, for students. Some of the questions for the debate were submitted by LSU students via Twitter, and many students attended the debate as well.
LSU sophomore Tori Travis believes student involvement is a good thing.
“It is exciting to be able to watch it and know that you’re asking the questions and kind of getting informed on things that we want to know about that’s related to us,” Travis said.
Students wanted the candidates to discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from transportation to higher education. Some even wanted to hear about the candidates’ plans for Louisiana’s economy.
Some students felt they are not well informed about the candidates, and they hoped the debate would help them learn more.
As for the winner, students said this debate was fair game.
“You never know in a debate,” said LSU sophomore Joanie Lyons. “Anyone can win. Someone can say something that’s really awesome and a lot of people speak to heart with and it can come out of left field. So you just never really know.”
Students came into this debate with high expectations, but now that it’s over, were they satisfied?
“I thought it was fantastic,” said LSU senior Chris Handy. “It was very constructive. It wasn’t very adversarial. I think the candidates played it mostly clean and talked about a lot of really great issues.”
Other students enjoyed the debate, but were hoping for a little more. LSU senior Gabrielle Murphy said she was hoping for “a little more action,” but she believes the candidates answered the questions well for the most part.
Being student-run, many believed this debate was unique. The atmosphere was intimate, and students were able to sit close to the candidates. The candidates answered questions submitted by students, which is incredible, LSU junior Myles Sonnier said.
“I think it exceeded the hype everyone gave it,” said Sonnier, who recently attended another governor’s debate. He believes the TigerTV debate “blew that one out of the water.”
Now that the debate is over, there is some disagreement over who performed best.
“As far as who won the debate, I’d have to give it to either Jay Dardenne or John Bell Edwards,” said Handy.
“I don’t think that anyone won, honestly. I have a really hard time deciding that. I think they were all too scared,” Murphy said.
On Saturday, students will be able to vote for the candidate they believe deserves the position as governor.
