The University announced in a tweet that the LSU Emergency Operations Center is monitoring Tropical Storm Gordon as it approaches the U.S.
Baton Rouge is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning. National Weather Service New Orleans meteorologist Kevin Gilmore said the storm is not expected to dissipate, and people should be prepared for the storms’ potential.
The storm is projected to continue its motion to the northwest, and it’s estimated to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.
“For the time being, we are not expecting the system to stall out,” Gilmore said. “We are expecting the major impacts, so be watching for heavy rainfall in [the Baton Rouge] area.”
Classes and events will continue as planned Tuesday, according to a tweet from the University.
The University is postponing Public Safety Day, which was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, according to LSU Media Relations Director Ernie Ballard. Ballard said there is no new date for the event yet.
The University cancelled a day of class in August 2017 due to Hurricane Harvey, which was a tropical storm at the time.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
