Gov. Jeff Landry honored several Louisiana citizens for their heroic actions during Hurricane Francine on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The commendations were presented to individuals and groups who went above and beyond to assist their communities during the storm’s impact.
Among the honorees was Miles Crawford, a nurse at University Medical Center, who rescued a man trapped in his vehicle by flooding in New Orleans. Hunter Hughes and Zachary Hooge, both 16-year-olds from Watson, were also recognized for helping their neighbors by fixing generators before the hurricane hit.
Additionally, the Fisher Middle High School football team from Lafitte was praised for distributing over 60,000 sandbags in two days to homes and businesses providing protection from rising waters.
“In the worst of times here in Louisiana, we always see communities come together to support each other. These folks today represent the best of Louisiana, and I am honored to officially recognize them for their actions,” Landry said.
