There has been two major changes in college football this year: the conference realignment and the 12-team playoff. There have also been major changes with the two teams set to face off in the Modelo Kickoff Classic on Sunday.
LSU and USC both lost Heisman-winning quarterbacks, meaning two new guys will have to step up to the plate.
Any time a team loses talented playmakers like Jayden Daniels or Caleb Williams, there is sure to be some uncertainty. For LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, however, there has never been uncertainty about staying in Baton Rouge.
Even though he was not a starter, he has three years of experience with the Tiger offense and now he is ready for his shot to lead them.
“Obviously there’s a different dynamic, you know, going from being a backup to the starter,” Nussmeier said. “But you know, I feel like it’s just taking the same approach that I’ve always taken. I’m just trying to lead and be vocal. Be an uplifting spirit. Keep the guys going.”
As for the Trojans, junior Miller Moss will take over at quarterback. Like Nussmeier, he will probably not be as much of a physical threat as his predecessor.
However, USC head coach Lincoln Riley has some talented receivers in his arsenal, perfect for his air raid offense. LSU’s defense has kept that in mind as they prepared strategies during fall camp.
“The ability to pressure on the perimeter, the ability to mix coverages so the quarterback doesn’t know what he’s getting every play, that is also an important piece of playing really good defense,” Head Coach Brian Kelly said.
Both quarterbacks has successful bowl game performances and both have the weapons they need to make the big plays.
Nussmeier will likely have better protection, as the LSU offensive line was ranked one of the highest in the country last year. Moss does have the edge on accuracy, though.
The two guys have everything to prove. They both have been waiting years to start for their programs. On top of all of that, there may be even more pressure on Nussmeier since LSU has not won an opener since 2019.
That could change soon, though. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CST.
