LSU Women’s Basketball defeated LSU Alexandria in their last exhibition game by a final score of 117-37, which showed glimpses of what fans can expect this upcoming season.
Kailyn Gilbert, a junior transfer guard from the University of Arizona, made her presence known by finishing with an impressive stat line of 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Most importantly, Gilbert was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive side of the court with two steals and a block.
The Tigers’ leading scorer was superstar, junior guard Flau’jae Johnson, who scored 29 points while going 3-3 from the three-point line.
For the first time in the team’s exhibition games, sophomore Sa’Myah Smith got some playing time. Smith is coming off of a previous torn ACL that abruptly ended her season seven games into last year.
Smith knocked some of the rust off, finishing with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
When taking a closer look at the new faces making up this season’s roster, true-freshman guard Jada Richard made her first-ever start in the purple and gold. Gaining valuable experience, Richard was able to finish with 14 points and go perfect from the free-throw line on four attempts.
Standout guard Mikaylah Williams did not play tonight.
Mississippi State transfer guard Mjracle Sheppard is battling a lingering, stressed reaction and is expected to miss approximately a couple of weeks.
Senior guard Last-Tear Poa continues to be away from the team due to personal reasons.
However, once the roster becomes fully healthy, the guard depth will be among the deepest Mulkey has had available during her tenure with LSU.
With this being the Tigers’ last exhibition game, Head Coach Kim Mulkey is ready to get the show on the road.
