In 2024, the LSU Special Olympics club was introduced at LSU. Founded by Ava Benfiglio, who was heavily involved with the Special Olympics in New Orleans.
When attending a Special Olympics conference in Wisconsin, Benfiglio learned about all the different colleges with Special Olympics clubs and thought “LSU definitely needs a club like that, I know so many people that have connections with special olympics” Benfiglio said.
Many individuals involved in this club have a deeper connection with the Special Olympics. Benfiglio’s younger brother with cerebral palsy is an active participant in the Special Olympics. Adam Fields, Special Olympics athletic representative, worked at a special needs camp, Camp Able in New Orleans which pursued him to get more involved with special needs programs.
“Seeing the impact that camp had not only on the campers’ life but also my life, led me throughout high school to get involved with the special needs community and coming to LSU looking for more ways to get involved,” Fields said.
The LSU Special Olympics club hosted a basketball tournament, which was their biggest event of the semester. This event brought the highest turnout the club has ever had, from 65 volunteers and 27 participants.
This club shares a powerful impact from beyond just their events that is felt all around.
“Seeing the pure joy on not only the athletes but also their families, there’s no difference here, everyone’s the same,” Fields said.
LSU Special Olympics club strives to help build inclusion in the Baton Rouge community.
