LSU Women’s Basketball against L.A. Tech in the Big Easy was anything but easy for either of these teams. LSU Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kim Mulkey was coaching against her alma mater and the team she used to take the court for.
The game was tightly contested throughout the first half. The Tigers struggled to establish a rhythm on offense, while shots were falling for the Lady Techsters. L.A. Tech shot 6-15 from behind the arc in the first half, keeping the game close.
Mulkey told her team heading into the game that the Lady Techsters would be no easy task. “Louisiana Tech has a good basketball team,” Coach said. “Louisiana Tech is picked to win that league. Louisiana Tech runs some good stuff offensively, and they make you work.”
LSU was only able to muster 39 points in the first half. The team shot 38% from the field and only made one three-pointer. However, the tigers were able to end the first half with a nine-point lead.
In the second half, the Tigers were able to get their high-powered offense going. LSU scored 22 and 26 points in each quarter while also holding L.A. Tech to 14 and 17 points.
Mikaylah Williams was a difference maker for the Tigers. The guard had 19 points and was the Tigers’ leading scorer. She was efficient in this contest. Williams shot 6-10 from the field and 5-6 at the free-throw line.
When her teammate, Flau’jae Johnson, was asked about Williams and the type of player she is, Johnson had nothing but great things to say about the junior. “When she gets going, you can’t really stop her. She makes ridiculously tough shots. I call it lucky, but it’s starting to not look like luck anymore,” Johnson said. “When she gets in her groove, she’s an unstoppable player.”
The Tigers lived at the free-throw line in this contest. The team shot 25-35 from the charity stripe. Being efficient from the free-throw line will be key for the team as it heads into conference play.
Conference play for the Tigers begins soon, as they will face a tough Kentucky team in their opener. However, before they get there, the Tigers will have to handle business against Morgan State, UT Arlington and Alabama State to close out the calendar year.
With the win against L.A. Tech, the Tigers remain undefeated on the season and extend their winning streak to 11 games.
