January is notably one of the busiest times of the year in the world of sports. Men’s basketball, women’s basketball, gymnastics, tennis, College Football Playoff, transfer portal, NFL Playoffs, UDA and UCA nationals all happening within the same time frame.
The month of January looks even busier for the Fighting Tigers, especially this week as LSU Sports including gymnastics and men’s basketball are on the road.
The LSU Spirit Squads kicked things off at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida for what fans often refer to as the ‘cheer and dance Superbowl’.
The Tiger Girls competed at the UDA College Nationals this previous weekend earning a silver medal in both the D1A jazz and hip-hop categories. Many Tiger Girls fans were not happy after this loss and feel that the team was robbed of first place. Though the loss was devastating to some, the second place in jazz marked the highest ever for the program in that category.
Alongside the Tiger Girls, the LSU Coed Cheer team competed at the UCA College Nationals in the D1A traditional and game-day divisions. The team earned both 4th and 8th place which shows signs of drastic improvement, all thanks to this season’s new leadership.
Men’s Basketball traveled to Gainsville, Florida to take on the Florida Gators but ultimately fell short in a 61-79 point loss marking their fifth in SEC gameplay. This is not a good look for the team as the remainder of their schedule is crawling with SEC gameplay. Hopefully looking to pull off a win, the Tigers will host the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for their next home game.
The Lady Tigers are coming off of a big win in Norman, Oklahoma after facing off against Aliyah Chavez and the No.13 Oklahoma Sooners. This marks the second SEC road win for the Tigers after a 80-59 point victory at Georgia.
Speaking of the Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Gym suffered a heartbreaking loss last week on the road in Athens. The Tumbling Tigers are hoping to bounce back for their home opener in Baton Rouge as they welcome the Kentucky Wildcats for a catfight in the PMAC Friday night.
