LSU Women’s Basketball players Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams spoke to media in the conclusion of the Baton Rouge Regional where they defeated Texas Tech 101-47 on Sunday afternoon.
This game marked the end of Johnson’s time in the PMAC as a Tiger. After being prompted, Johnson reminisced on her time at LSU.
“When I came here, I just wanted to be SEC freshman of the year. That’s all I was thinking about.” Johnson said. “Of course winning a national championship, that was crazy. Everything else that came with it has just been beyond my wildest dreams.”
Johnson checked out of the game for the last time in the Pete Maravich center 2 minutes into the fourth and recieved a standing ovation and a roaring crowd as thanks for her time in the program.
“It was like a roar I heard in the PMAC…I gave everything and I just let it out.” Johnson said when asked about her emotions throughout her last minutes. “It was the most beautiful thing that I’ve ever been a part of. Something I’m going to remember forever. Just so thankful for the fans. Thankful to Coach Mulkey. The whole program, it’s just been unimaginable.”
Mikaylah Williams also shined bright in the last PMAC game of her junior season. Williams finished with 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists on the day. Williams attributed her ability to perform to her team’s ability to get stops and hit hard on defense.
When asked about her huge offensive day, Williams stated, “That’s just a testament to everybody buying in and locking in and knowing what we need to do to get far in this tournament run.”
The Tigers came out hot and only dialed up the heat as the game went on. They’ll need to sustain this level of play as they look ahead to facing the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet Sixteen.
