Final decisions are near for the LSU Campus Master Plan. Students got a detailed sneak peek at what’s to come from this plan that has been underway since January 2016.
LSU’s planning partners from NBBJ said the main goal of the Campus Master Plan is to grow the campus and to create better overall experiences for students.
“A large part of the Campus Master Plan has been trying to understand how much space we need to support that growth and where that growth might occur on the campus,” NBBJ Principal Kim Way said.
The planners are getting rid of Middleton Library and Lockett Hall to create a larger social area for students and to regain the historic qualities of the Quad. They said those buildings are misplaced because they interrupt the social expectations in the Quad area.
The master plan includes a new library to replace Middleton and renovated working areas that will improve students’ learning environments.
The plan will move parking to the outskirts of campus to create more space for pedestrians. This will decrease parking spaces, but more parking garages and a new transit system are underway.
“The implementation of these walkways, and thinking about pedestrians and transit in a brand new way, is really going to be cutting edge, especially for LSU’s campus,” LSU Student Body President Zach Faircloth said.
LSU Student Government hosted a student-only open forum on campus Wednesday evening, where students learned about expected academic, social and environmental improvements.
