Two top 5 teams defending those top spots this weekend on the field as LSU Baseball and Softball defend the SEC.
Now, No. 1 LSU Baseball is working to keep that top spot as they prepare for Missouri. Though Mizzou is unranked, LSU could still face some challenges. They’ll need to start fast both offensively and defensively to take this series.
“That’s something I’m really proud of the players to this point so far,” Head Coach Jay Johnson said. “Respecting what they have to do to prepare to play. It’s great that it’s conference but the fact that it’s conference has nothing to do with how we prepare to play.”
This year’s team seems to be well-rounded on defense. With crazy defensive plays and great pitching LSU has remained 16-1 and with guys like Cade Anderson and Chris Stanfield they could hold on to that top spot.
Over at Tiger Park, LSU Softball is working to make it to the top spot. They’re No. 4 right now but just like Baseball, great pitching and defense is keeping them hot going into their first SEC matchup against No. 23 Kentucky.
Redshirt Senior Danieca Coffey, coming off an ACL is showing no signs of rust. But Coffey says this team is doing that people need to be paying more attention to.
“I think hitting in general,” Coffey said. “I think our offense has changed tremendously, whether it’s hunting pitches, people doing damage, and being able to just be confident in their adjustment.”
Freshman pitcher Jayden Heavener and Sydney Berzon have been giving opponents hell, between the two sharp shooters they have 114 strikeouts this season and this weekend is looking no different.
Baseball and Softball are in the sweet spot right now, but could this be the week someone falls. By continuing the work from week’s past, an SEC series win could be exactly what both these teams need to stay in the Top 5.
First pitch for Baseball is Friday at 6:30 in Alex Box and 6:00 against Kentucky in Tiger Park.
