LSU Outfielder Jake Brown and Pitcher Grant Fontenot speak to the press ahead of the team traveling to Rocky Top to take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
Jake Brown began with how the team has become more consistent over the past few games against Kentucky and Southern.
“Guys are really honing in and locking into doing their job, and the two out hitting has been something that really impressed me,” Brown said. “I don’t know how many runs were scored against Kentucky with two outs, but it was really impressive.”
Brown then compared the current Baseball team with the ’24 teams later season turnaround adding, “this team is really talented, really prepared and just playing the baseball that we’re capable of playing right now.”
Brown later discussed how the team has overcome large run deficits early in games saying, “the Vandy series was a big turning point for that, just because you saw us fall behind a little bit and then now just it’s the resilience of the team…If someone falls a little bit back, you have guys next to them that can bring them back up.
Brown touched on how a road series can help the team bond saying, “you get more time to hang out with your guys. Like when you’re in a hotel room, you’re all locked in together. Especially after curfew, so we’re all just all up there enjoying it.”
Jake Brown ended by talking about his trust in the team on the defensive end stating, “we have so many guys that are able to get in there and contribute at any given moment that it’s a good spot to be in when you have so many guys that can perform.”
Grant Fontenot began his remarks by talking about improvements he has made since last season, especially in trusting himself on the mound.
“You trust yourself more as you go on about your process,” Fontenot said. ” I think a lot of it came down to…some mechanical changes…and also it comes down to repertoire that I had…changing into this year.”
He then discussed the impact Catcher Omar Serna Jr. has had as he has gotten more play time recently.
“He’s grown a lot,” Fontenot said. “I mean, he’s a young player…having the impact that he has as a freshman is huge. He’s a great catcher…He’s got a bright future.”
Fontenot then discussed the impact losing Cooper Moore to an injury on the team.
“Injuries are part of the game,” Fontenot said. “But you know, we’ve got to depend, and guys are going to step up.”
Fontenot ended his remarks by discussing how the team has come together and what overall needs to be focused on in the late season.
“I think a jey thing for us moving forward is to win those one run games,” Fontenot said. “I mean, we can score 17, score two and win, so kind of depends on the day.”
