History was made in Tiger Park on Wednesday 9th as LSU Softball’s Beth Torina claims her 700th win as a head coach. She caps off the coveted achievement as the LSU Tigers took down the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 10-1 in 6 innings. A gritty defensive play from the diamond propelled the Tigers to victory as they added another to the win column.
LSU celebrated Wednesday night in honor of their beloved head coach Beth Torina. She achieved a mark that many head coaches have not claimed in NCAA history She reflected on all of her adventures leading up to this moment.
“I didn’t play in any of the games, but it makes me proud to think of all the women that did”, Head Coach Beth Torina said. “I think that is what the deal is, when you hit one of those big marks you think about the women that gave their all at LSU and FIU and the way they gave not to their university but to me as well.”
Torina’s impact has been a large reason why LSU softball is a top tier program. Her impact stretched onto girls such as Tatum Clopton, who pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 hits and 1 run on Wednesday. She explained how her career was revived at lsu all thanks to her coach.
“I am here because of her”, Pitcher Tatum Clopton said. “ The opportunities that she’s given me to come back, and the second chances to be part of the team and to get to play softball again, and that is something I’ll never take for granted again.”
Clopton and the outfield delivered a strong defensive showing, but the Tigers’ offense only found its stride in the opening and closing frames. With the score stuck at 4-1 for much of the game, the Tigers came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in four RBIs to shut the door on the Bulldogs.
The Tigers want to see more of these tight games go in their favor as they begin to prepare against some of the SEC’s best opponents in later weeks.
The 5th ranked Tigers take on the 3rd ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a top-5 series showdown starting on Friday in College Station, Texas.
