The LSU Football Team had an open practice where fans got to watch their team practice. At the end of the session Head Coach Brian Kelly spoke to the media after the team’s open spring practice at Tiger Stadium.
“Another step towards developing our football team and getting us closer to the preparation necessary for when we go into camp, getting us ready for our first game.”
A notable starter had to miss practice today. Running back Caden Durham was in the sidelines, but it was just a precaution, as he will be back for practice next week.
Coach Kelly addressed what they were looking for in the players who transfer during the offseason.
“We were very intentional in the kind of personality. They are leaders in the way they have handled themselves, even though they have been here since January. Not just on the fields but they are playing an impact role behind the scenes.”
LSU offensive lineman will miss the teams best player in Will Campbell as he goes to the NFL Draft. Coaches feel confident about the players they have, to not only protect Nussmeier, but to improve the running game.
“Made great progress in building versatility within the group. We’ve been clear that the mandate was not to start the spring and name our 5 starters. It’s been moving guys around and seeing what their right fits are. We’ll give us sometime to see who the starters are, and build some continuity throw the back end of preseason camp with the starting five.”
One of LSU most exciting prospects for next season is Harlem Berry. Coach Kelly hyped fans when he was asked about what he has seen of the best High School running back in the country.
“He is a natural runner of the football. He see things that you just don’t coach. The great back just have that ability to see things on the move. He still has to be coach on several things, he is very receptive. He is really good. He lives up to the building of the best running back of the country based on his natural abilities he has a running back. He will play for us a freshman.”
Coach Kelly isn’t satisfied with the format of the open spring practice. He would actually look forward to playing against an in-state rival.
“I would by open to that. There is a lot of things that would have to come together in that situation. In years past it was a dream, I think is within our grasp now. I think there needs to be a look on some rules that make it difficult, but I think we are in a course where I could see that happening.
Coach feels really confident with the combination of talent the team has, from incoming freshman, to transfers, and players that have developed at LSU.
“You wanna be in a position where you bringing portal players to building off of what you already have and that’s why this roster is the best roster we’ve had because we’re building both depth within our football team and we’re bringing in veteran players, it’s the the best mix that we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
LSU will continue their spring camp, with high expectations on what this team can do.
