LSU football’s John Emery Jr. will return for his seventh season of college football, he announced on Thursday.
Emery was a five-star prospect coming out of Destrahan High School. Emery was the No. 13 ranked prospect in the nation and the No. 2 running back in the country in the 2019 class.
A return to the Tigers isn’t inevitable. His agent told The Advocate they are that he hasn’t yet decided where he’ll play.
Emery came to LSU and rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns on 39 carries as a freshman on the 2019 national champion roster. He appeared in nine games as a sophomore before sitting out all of his junior season.
Emery returned in 2022 as a senior and played in 11 games with two starts. He rushed for 375 yards and six touchdowns on 76 carries. He also caught 13 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Emery had a career game with three rushing touchdowns against Texas A&M.
Emery played in seven games with no starts as a fifth-year senior and was a key part of LSU’s running back rotation but suffered a season-ending injury against Florida that season.
In his sixth season for the Tigers, he showed flashes of dominance versus USC, where he was the leading rusher for LSU with 61 yards on 10 attempts. Emery then suffered another ACL injury in a non-contact drill during practice before the week two matchup versus Nicholls.
Emery returns to LSU for his seventh season and faces a talented running back room consisting of Caden Durham, who earned Freshman All-SEC honors; Harlem Berry, the No. 1 running back in the 2025 cycle; and JT Lindsey, the No. 7 running back in the 2025 cycle.
